Our History
College Park First United Methodist Church began in 1894 under the
leadership of Rev. J.W.G. Watkins in what was then called the town of
Manchester, Georgia. The original congregation met in the home of the Mr. &
Mrs. James Matt Walker as the Manchester Methodist Church. In 1896 the
town of Manchester was incorporated and the name of the city was changed
to College Park as well as the name of the church.
The church was built at its present location in 1897, but rapid growth in the
city quickly brought growth to the church buildings. Several Sunday School
classrooms were added in 1910 and more sanctuary space in the 1920's,
dedicated in 1939. In the 1940’s and 50’s more renovation and building took
place as an educational building was added as well as further addition to the
sanctuary and a chapel.
As the Atlanta International Airport expanded, and MARTA placed a rail
station just one block north of the church, the community and church
changed in many ways as well. MARTA funded renovations to the church in
the 1980's, the greatest one being new steps at the Main Street entrance.
Today, College Park First United Methodist Church has approximately 300
members. We continue to grow in new directions along with the city of
College Park. The Learning Academy of College Park began in the early part
of the twenty-first century as a community outreach program of the church. It
has grown into a vital educational resource for families in the South Fulton
area, and it represents College Park First UMC's continuing faith in God's
guidance in the new century and beyond. With the Lord as our Savior, the
best is always yet to come!
